NetherRealm has quickly become my favorite developer studio for fighting games with the Injustice series helping to round out the impressive and growing list of classics. On Thursday at The Game Awards in Los Angeles, we learned the release date for the studios next entry.
Mortal Kombat 11 is on its way back and if the trailer is any indication–and you can bet it is–the newest offering from Ed Boon and Co. will be among the bloodiest ever in the martial arts-meets sci-fi-meets-horror franchise. MK 11 is due out on April 23 for the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch and PC. From the trailer, there appears to be at least one new character, but it's hard to make heads or tails of the other stuff.

The first look at the new game will come on January 16 via a Twitch stream. Perhaps there we'll learn about the new game's roster, stages and gameplay additions such as enhanced environmental attacks. The stream will have a keynote speaker to put the gameplay action into perspective for viewers. Fans who pre-order the game will gain access to the beta–if they are purchasing the PS4 or Xbox One versions.
Also, pre-order customers on all platforms will receive Shao Kahn as a playable character. It's not a bad pre-order bonus, but I must admit, I expected a few more layers with that as well as more special editions. Things could still change or more information could be revealed, but as of now, there will be two versions of MK11. The Standard Edition ($59.99) which as usual, only includes the base game, and The Premium Edition ($99.99). For $100, you get the base game and the Kombat Pack.
As of now, we don't know what will be included in the Kombat Pack, which is likely to also be sold separately for around $29.99. When Mortal Kombat X released back in 2015, it's DLC included four new characters (Skarlet, Kenshi, Rain, and Freddy Krueger) and it cost only $14.99 with each character carrying a $4.99 price tag if purchased individually. Because the cost of the Premium Edition is a full $40 more, it would appear this version's DLC pack will offer more content.
At least that's what should be the case. As we move into the New Year, expect to see more information on the upcoming release. Be on the lookout for an MK 11 timeline of pre-launch news and events. When it's up, bookmark the page and use it as a quick reference for the latest information ahead of April 23
